West Highland Way accommodation FAQs

What hikers need to know about booking accommodation

Booking arrangements vary between hotels, B&Bs, hostels, campsites and other places to stay. Here are answers to the most common questions.

Are West Highland Way accommodation bookings open?

Some providers are already accepting bookings for the 2027 season. Others will open later. The dated booking status near the top of this page shows how many monitored providers were accepting bookings at the last update.

Does “accepting bookings” mean rooms are available?

No. It means the property’s reservation channel is open. Availability still depends on your dates, group size and preferred room type.

Does “not yet accepting bookings” mean it is sold out?

No. It generally means bookings have not opened or that the provider’s current booking position has not yet been confirmed.

When does West Highland Way accommodation open for booking?

There is no single opening date for the whole trail. Early booking runs from May to September, the peak booking window is October to February, and bookings from March onward may require more flexibility.

The Hiking Club shows booking status for monitored providers and lets you set opening alerts for the places relevant to your itinerary.

Is it too late to plan my West Highland Way?

Not necessarily. A different start date, daily stage, overnight stop or accommodation type may help you build a workable itinerary. Later bookings generally call for more flexibility, especially if you want private rooms in smaller stops.

What if one night of my itinerary is unavailable?

Compare other places at that stop, check nearby overnight locations or adjust the relevant daily stage. You can also try different dates or set a cancellation alert for a preferred property where supported.

Can I camp along the West Highland Way?

Yes. Established campsites can be included in many itineraries. Responsible lightweight wild camping is also possible where Scottish access rights allow it, but special restrictions apply in parts of Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park during the camping management season.

Read our West Highland Way camping guide and check the current local rules before choosing an overnight stop.

Can I use transport if my preferred overnight stop is full?

Sometimes. Buses, trains or a Loch Lomond ferry may help you reach a suitable place to stay or reshape a stage. Check the connection and timetable for your dates, and make sure the resulting walking plan suits your group.

Does Expert Access guarantee accommodation?

No. Expert Access cannot guarantee rooms or pitches on specific dates. Ricky can help you design realistic stages around your group’s pace, preferences and the accommodation options available when you plan.

Can I start planning a future hiking season?

Yes. You can compare routes and draft a West Highland Way itinerary before every accommodation provider has opened bookings for your hiking season.
